Camellia Quintessence
This is a very unique camellia as it produces lax stems which look terrific trailing over the sides of hanging baskets, walls and containers. Planted in the garden as a trailing plant will disappoint as the flowers will trail on the ground. However you can get around this problem by staking the central leader firmly. Allow only strong side growths from this central stem to grow and the end result will be a small weeping bush. Camellia Quintessence can also be grown as an espalier but it is a slow small grower so will require patience. Fully grown you can only expect it to grow 1.5ms.
Camellia Quintessence was bred by a New Zealander and is a seedling from C. lutchensis a Japanese form. The single flowers are quite large, but still a miniature. Buds are pink and open white with a hint of pink. When pollinated they turn a blush pink. Flowers are weather tolerant and last a long time before falling cleanly. The flowers fragrance is outstanding, a very sweet musky fragrance.
Grown as a container or hanging basket plant gives the flexibility of bringing the flowering plant close to the house when flowering and then put in a cooler more shady spot through the summer months. Allowed to grow naturally this Camellia forms arching tiers with its branches. It would make a great Bonsai subject.
Always keep well watered if contained and feed with Osmocote for pots, at three monthly intervals. Give a dressing of Gypsum once a year. Only prune off unwanted branches.
