Camellia Sinensis

Grown Your Own Tea!

Camellia Sinensis var sinensis
Is the variety available here to grow leaves for the production of Green tea.  The leaves are long, narrow and slightly crinkled.  Small single white flowers are produced in spring but if it’s tea you desire then keep the bush low and bushy by continually plucking the tender young leaves.  Steep these in boiling water for a refreshing drink.

Grow this Camellia in good soil in full sun, sheltered from strong winds.

Camellia sinensis var assamica
and its hybrids is the commercial black tea variety grown mainly in India and Ceylon for the world tea drinking market.  There have been trials to grow it in N.Z. in the Golden Bay region.
