Campsis Mme Galen - Chinese Trumpet Vine
Campsis Mme Galen is one of the many members of the Bignonia family and a very spectacular flowering climber at this time of year. Large flared trumpet flowers of glowing salmon red are produced at the ends of stems and are quite a show stopper until the middle of autumn. This is a self clinging vine requiring a stout support as the branches are heavy and densely clothed with large pinnate leaves. It is ideal for covering large fences and trees quickly. Chinese Trumpet vine is deciduous in winter and that is the best time to cut back this climber if required. Simply cut all branches back to within two or three buds from the main framework .
Don’t allow to let this climber to clamber up masonry as it will dislodge the mortar. For such a glossy looking climber it is surprisingly salt and wind tolerant . Once established will survive droughts and all frosts. Once I had my breath taken away with the sight of a telephone pole completely covered and glowing with the richly coloured flowers of this gorgeous climber.
