Flax Caterpillars

Two different species of caterpillars are the culprits. The flax looper caterpillar cuts windows in the leaves while the flax notcher caterpillar cuts notches in the leaf margins.  The  flax looper moth is reddish brown and the Flax looper moth is white.  Both are nocturnal.

The larger growing species Phormium cookianum and tenax are strong enough growing to be able to support predations of this native pest however the slower, smaller growing coloured forms need to be sprayed as young plants can be wiped out by these pests.
