Hebe Blue Gem

Hebe Blue Gem

This coastal hardy dwarf shrub flowers through the dry summer months until April without any need of extra watering.

It has an interesting history as originated in England in the mid 19 th century  from a cross between a species of Hebe elliptica from the Falkland Islands and Hebe speciosa from N.Z.It was introduced into N.Z. where it has been a popular and enduring variety .Indeed it is one of the hardiest and long lived varieties which   grows best where it is dry, windy and sunny.

Hebe Blue Gem is a wide spreading mutli stemmed shrub with broad dark green glossy leaves. It grows 1m by 1m. Masses of densely packed stubby flowers are deep lavender blue and attract bees and Bumlebees. Prune after flowering by removing all the stems with the old flower stems or seeds. This Hebe is a clean grower. The leaves do not succumb to spots or mildews.

Plant en masse for a lovely summer display of blue flowers.
