Katydids

Are large green soft bodied insects with bright red eyes and long antennae.  Being mainly nocturnal they are those unseen pests that come in the night to eat big chunks out of leaves, flower buds and flowers.  They love roses, Dahlias and young developing citrus fruit and I have also seen them on young Pohutukawas.  Occasionally you see them during the day but they are fairly well disguised with their leaf green colouring and flat leaf like bodies.  They are around from March to June.

Control - Chemical
Spray chewed plants with the systemic insecticide Orthene.  The Katydids next meal will be a fatal one.

Control - Organic
Remove long grass underneath trees and shrubs where Katydids can shelter.
Keep a look out for them and pick them off. They are fairly slow moving.
