Mandevillea Suavelons

If you want the heady scent of Gardenias in your garden but struggle to grow those finicky plants in our climate then consider growing the Chilean Jasmine or .Mandevillea suavelons.  Hailing from Argentina this fuss free quick growing climber produces ivory white flaring trumpets in large clusters through the warmer months.  It’s evocative fragrance will waft through your windows on balmy evenings and glow in the moonlight.

Chilean Jasmine is a slender grower with oblong deep green leaves.  In autumn the leaves go purple before falling and large bunches of long green and bronze seed pods are a feature through winter over the bare branches.  It is a climber which always looks attractive.  Being narrow growing it is ideal to grow in confined places but preferably anywhere near a window or doorway where its fragrance can be appreciated.

Chilean Jasmine is very tolerant of root restriction and tends to flower more copiously when it has to fight for survival so would make an ideal candidate for container growing.  This climber can be cut down to the ground every winter and will still flower the following summer.  However that is not necessary as it is such a neat grower.  Don’t confuse this Mandevillea with the other brightly flowered varieties available. They are frost tender by nature, evergreen and not scented.
