Wisterias

For maximum flower production the climbing Wisterias need to be carefully controlled as they make a lot of new growth at this time of year.  Every couple of weeks shorten the side shoots new growth back to three leaves.  Allow the main climbing frame to develop if you are still requiring more cover but if the vine has covered all that you need then shorten back all growths.  Be particulary vigilant at the base of the climber as shoots can be sent under decking and up through the eaves.

Left to its on devices Wisterias are bold enough to smother and strangle bushes and smaller trees in a very short space of time. Carefully controlled, nothing  is more lovely than those fragrant blue flower racemes borne on bare branches in late spring.

Wisteias are a bit like apple trees.  They form flowering spurs which flower year after year.  A side dressing of potash applied now helps set flowers buds as well.
